The Issue at Hand

Traditional Leaders in Ghana play a significant role in Ghana’s land administration. They are responsible for significant portions of land and natural resources in Ghana.

Even though traditional leadership involves both Chiefs and Queen Mothers, only Chiefs are involved in customary land governance in Ghana. It has been realized that:

• There is high patriarchy at all areas across the country. Thus, Queen Mothers have been relegated to the background.

• Queen Mothers do not have a well-recognized structure for engagements.

• There have been no dedicated efforts to involve the participation of Queen Mothers at all levels in the society.

The Queen Mothers’ Platform was created to deal with these issues. Learn more about who we are as an organization here.
